Hair Transplants Overview

According to the American Hair Loss Association, by the age 35 more than two-thirds of men will experience hair loss (alopecia). Depending on how much the hair thins out, and how rapidly it happens, this can be quite upsetting. For more than 65 years, hair transplant surgery has been a popular treatment for men in the United States. Dr. Holden gives men the opportunity to regain their hair and self-confidence back with hair transplants. He will transfer healthy hair follicles from a localized area on the body to a more visible place on the head. Dr. Holden's patients at Scottsdale Plastic Surgeons are pleased with their results and recommend this procedure.

Hair Transplants Surgical Technique

There are numerous hair transplant procedures that can be considered in order to gain a fuller head of hair. Some techniques will result in moderate fullness while others will create more dramatic results. Taking this into consideration, hair grafts and flap surgery are two popular forms of hair transplant techniques.

Hair Grafts

Hair replacement surgery involves the use of hair grafts. At the donor site, the surgeon will remove what is known as the graft: a section of hair, the hair follicles, skin, and surrounding tissue. The number and size of the grafts used will be determined based on how much laxity exists on the surface of the scalp, as well as the density of hair growth in the donor areas. During surgery, grafts will be placed on the front, top and back of the head as needed.

Types of Hair Grafts

There are various types of grafts that can be used during surgery. The surgeon will likely use a combination of these:

  • Round Punch Grafts: This graft uses a tube-shaped instrument to punch out round-shaped hair grafts containing about 10-15 hairs.
  • Slit Grafts:  This procedure makes small slits into the scalp to create a graft. Slit Grafts typically insert up to 10 hairs per slit.
  • Strip Grafts: This graft uses the most hair. Strip grafts are thin, long lines of hair and tissue that can contain up to 40 hairs.
  • Mini-Grafts: These are smaller grafts that contain approximately 3-5 hairs.
  • Micro-Grafts: This is the smallest of all grafts, containing just 1-2 hairs.

Flap Surgery

For patients who have experienced serious hair loss and desire wide coverage restoration, flap surgery may be an option. This procedure covers larger areas of baldness by cutting out a large section of hair-bearing skin and transferring it to a new location where hair is limited. One flap of this nature is similar to 350 round punch grafts. However, this is a more aggressive approach and is not appropriate for everyone.

Hair Transplants During/After Surgery

All hair transplant surgeries are performed in our surgical facility. The entire procedure can take up to 3-5 hours to complete and local anesthesia is used. Recovery is dependent upon each individual and the extent of their surgery, although the average patient can return to work within a few days. Exercise and strenuous activity should be avoided for 3-4 weeks. Around 6 weeks post-op, an initial hair loss of the new grafts will occur. This is common and allows new, healthy hairs to grow.

Hair Transplants Expected Cost

The cost of hair transplant surgery will vary depending on the extent of the procedure. Generally, this hair restoration technique will average between $9,400-$16,000. Some factors that will decide the final cost include the type of graft used, the coverage of hair transplanted, the number of surgery sessions and whether any additional fillers are needed.

Hair Transplant FAQs

How Well Does it Work?

Men and women who are self-conscious about their thinning or balding hair can achieve desirable results with hair transplants. Patients who undergo this procedure are generally pleased with the outcome. On average, patients can attain 50-60% of new hair growth within the first year following surgery.

Are There Other Treatments?

Hair transplant surgery offers individuals the chance to regain hair in balding areas. For individuals who wish to try other avenues before considering surgery, there are topical solutions, oral medications and hair systems/camouflage pieces that may work.

Negative Side Effects?

There may be some skin irritation, slight itching and some skin discoloration after treatment, but this is usually only evident at the injection site and typically subsides in a few days. This procedure is non-invasive, and complications are usually rare.

Who is the Ideal Candidate?

The ideal candidate has a healthy amount of hair growth on the sides and back of the head. The more hair the patient has in the donor sites, the better the overall results. It is important to discuss your expectations with your surgeon. In addition, various factors may alter the cosmetic result, including hair color or texture.
